Stop Chasing Metal Slimes:
The King Hydra Grind
The ultimate post-game leveling guide for Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake.
Congratulations on beating Zoma! Now the real game begins. If you are reading this, you are probably trying to min-max your party for the bonus dungeon, Xenlon, and the hardest challenges the game has to offer.
Most players in the US community are still resetting their games trying to find Liquid Metal Slimes (Hagure Metal). I'm here to tell you: Stop. There is a much faster, more consistent way to hit Level 99.
XP Per Kill: 24,400
Flee Rate: 0%
Why King Hydra is the New Meta
While Metal Slimes offer high XP, they run away. A lot. King Hydra fights back, but he never runs. In the post-game dungeon (Cloudsgate Citadel area), you can encounter groups of up to three Hydras.
| Target | XP (Approx) | Stability |
|---|---|---|
| Liquid Metal Slime | ~10,000 | Low (High Flee Rate) |
| King Hydra | 24,400 | High (Never Flees) |
Defeating three King Hydras nets you over 73,000 XP in a single battle. With the right setup, you can clear this in 2 turns.
The Strategy: Monster Wrangler is Broken
The new Monster Wrangler vocation in the HD-2D Remake is essential for this grind. Forget standard attacks; we are going for pure DPS and crowd control.
1. The "Monster Pile-On" Nuke
This is your bread and butter. The skill Monster Pile-On (depending on translation, sometimes Call Monsters) deals damage based on the number of friendly monsters you've rescued.
- Turn 1: Cast Oomph (Bikill) on your Wrangler. Use a Sage or Hero to cast Sap on the Hydra.
- Turn 2: Unleash Monster Pile-On. With a full monster collection, this hits multiple times for massive damage, one-shotting the Hydra.
2. Sleep & Hypnos Hunt
King Hydras hit hard with fire, but they have a weakness: Sleep.
- Use a Mage or Sage to cast Snooze (Kasnooze).
- Once asleep, use a Dagger-user (Thief or Gadabout) to hit them with Hypnos Hunt (Persecutter). This deals 6x damage to sleeping enemies.
3. The "Forbearance" Tank
If you are struggling to survive their Scorching Flames, use a Warrior with the Forbearance (Niou Dachi) skill. Equip them with Dragon Mail or a Flame Shield to soak up all the damage while your DPS goes to work.
Essential Gear for Stability
King Hydras love to use Sweet Breath to put your party to sleep. If you all sleep, you die. Preparation is key.
- Rousing Ring (Full Moon Ring/Awakening Ring): Essential for your Healer. Prevents Sleep.
- Meteorite Bracer: Put this on your buffer so they can cast Oomph/Sap before the Hydras attack.
- Dragon Claws: If you use a Martial Artist, this weapon deals bonus damage to Dragons.

My personal recommendation. Handheld grinding for XP hurts your hands with standard Joy-Cons. This controller is a lifesaver for long DQ sessions.

Conclusion
The post-game of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is all about efficiency. Stop relying on RNG with Metal Slimes and start farming the King Hydras in the bonus dungeon.
Good luck, and may the RNG be in your favor for the drops!
